The primary difference between cataract surgery and bifocal implants is that cataract surgery is done to remove a patient’s cloudy lens, where as bifocal implantation is done to reduce or eliminate a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses. It is the only procedure available that restores good vision for distance, upclose and intermediate all at the sametime!

The onset of presbyopia has traditionally meant that patients are forced to using glasses for near vision. Even those individuals who have received laser vision correction for distance vision will eventually become presbyopic and need glasses or contact lenses to restore their near vision.

Multifocal lenses offer a solution. Unlike procedures that focus on changing the shape of the cornea, An implant works on the lens inside the eye. Consequently, patient’s vision after the procedure will be stable and unlikely to change over time. In addition, cataract surgery will not be necessary later in life. The multifocal lens that is used to replace the eye’s natural lens will provide clear vision at all distances, giving patients little or no dependence on traditional or progressive bifocal lenses.


ReZOOM


The bifocal implantation procedure is done as an outpatient basis at Yaldo Eye Center’s Surgical Facility and takes only a few minutes. An anesthetic is used to numb the eye and an IV delivers medications to keep the patient relaxed. Only one eye is done at a time. The second eye is done one day to one week after the first eye. We separate the two procedures for accuracy and safety. After the patient’s first eye is complete, we study the results of that procedure. The information from the first eye is used to customize the approach for the second eye.

Bifocal implantation is an exceptionally viable alternative for farsighted people who want to eliminate their dependence on traditional or progressive bifocals and those who may be showing signs of developing cataracts, even without symptoms. It may be the procedure of choice for patients who are too nearsighted, too farsighted or have cornea's that are too thin or flat for Lasik surgery.

ARRAY
Array Multifocal IOL offers patients a full range of vision, without the dependence of eyewear. With over five million lens implant procedures performed worldwide. Array Multifocal IOL has quickly become a popular choice in eye correction surgery. It requires approximately 15 to 30 minutes to implant the Array Multifocal IOL, performed under local anesthetic. The most common issues are glare at halos, but most people adapt to these visual conditions over time.

ReZOOM
Unlike conventional single-vision (monofocal) lens implants, state-of-the-art ReZoom™ lenses have been specially designed with multifocal zones that provide good vision across the spectrum of varying distances and light conditions. So you can see well anywhere and anytime, be it near, far or in between. Patients no longer have to settle for monofocal lenses that only provide good distance vision with limited ability to see objects that are near without glasses.

The ReZoom™ Multifocal Lens is a clear, foldable implant made of a high-refractive-index acrylic material. This new technology multifocal lens is designed to provide a full range of vision – near, distance and intermediate – after cataract treatment.

CRYSTALENS

The CrystaLens is an intraocular lens for cataracts. Implanted in the eye, the CrystaLens is fixed and stationary, preventing them from moving to focus while mimicking th eye's natural process. Its movement is facilitated by a flexible hinge within the lens. Typically performed as an outpatient surgery, a number of topical drops are placed in the eye, anesthetizing the eye and dilating the pupil. The surgery is painless, and generally takes 20 minutes.

The AcrySof ReSTOR lens is a foldable IOL that represents breakthrough technology because of its unique, patented optic design, which allows patients to experience the highest level of freedom from glasses ever achieved in IOL clinical trials.

The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL uses a combination of three complementary technologies: apodization, diffraction and refraction, to allow patients to experience a full range of high-quality vision without the need for reading glasses or bifocals. This range of vision without glasses is achieved through the optical properties of the IOL.

The benefit for patients is a high level of spectacle freedom. Alcon has patented the application of apodization technology to an IOL, making the AcrySof ReSTOR lens the first and only apodized diffractive IOL.

During U.S. clinical trials, the results with ReSTOR were remarkable:

  1. 80% of patients reported that after lens implant surgery with ReSTOR lenses, they no longer needed glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at all distances.
  2. 94% said they could drive and read the paper without contacts or glasses.
